Gavin,
You can increase the thickness of the non-wireframe representations
using the representation controls in the graphical representations window.
If you're having trouble with the old "cartoon", I'd suggest that you
consider upgrading to VMD 1.8.3, and use the "NewCartoon" which eliminates
the gaps that you're having trouble with.
I think that making a solid model from the NewCartoon rep is the best way
to go. Let me know how this proceeds, I'm curious to know how it turns out.
