All major Linux distributions have switched to X.org, or will in the next release.
X.org has been based on an earlier release of XFree86, and has thus less
advanced hardware support. Consider XFree86 dead, for good.

However, current X.org has already very good support for ATI's Radeon line of
products, and Fedora Core 3 (due 1. November, IIRC) should have it. In general,
X.org promises a far quicker development cycle, and improved performance, albeit not
necessarily for 3d acceleration.

Also, ATI has announced (caution, high vaporware content) an intent to
maintain their binary-only drivers for Linux much better in near future.

Right now, nVidia has much better acceleration benchmarks (caution: skewed
for gamers) than ATI. This might nor might not change soon.
