VMD 1.9.3 is ancient, you should switch to a current version. While
there are named "alpha", they are as stable as 1.9.3.

I guess you stumble upon a very common Windows problem. VMD working
directory is the installation folder where no one has write permission.
You can open the "Properties" of the VMD shortcut and in the field
"Start in:" paste any folder you can write to.
