JMV installation instructions

Welcome to JMV! JMV is the Java Molecular Viewer from the Theoretical Biophysics Group at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

Instructions

1.) Download the Java Runtime Environment

JMV requires the Java Plug-In, which is included in the Java Runtime Environment, version 1.3 or higher. Visit
http://java.sun.com/j2se/
to get the latest version of the JRE.

Note: If you do not have the Java Plug-In installed when you try to run JMV from a browser, it may prompt you to download it, or bring you to the download page.

Note: You must have administrative privileges on your machine when installing the JRE in order for the Java Plug In to be recognized by browsers.

Note: These instructions are for downloading JRE version 1.4, which contains the Java Plug-In, version 1.4. We will try to keep these instructions up to date with the most recent releases of the JRE, but be aware that more recent versions may be available.

JRE Installation:

Windows

Go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html. Under the "Download J2SE v 1.4.0_01" header, select the "DOWNLOAD" link from the "JRE" column in one of the "Windows" rows ("Windows (US Only)" or "Windows (all languages including English)"), and continue the download process.

Solaris

Go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html. Under the "Download J2SE v 1.4.0_01" header, select the "DOWNLOAD" link from the "JRE" column in the "Solaris" row that corresponds to your system, and continue the download process.

Linux

Go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html. Under the "Download J2SE v 1.4.0_01" header, select the "DOWNLOAD" link from the "JRE" column in the one of the Linux rows ("Linux RedHat shell script" or "Linux GNUZIP tar shell script"), and continue the download process.

2.) Download Java3D

JMV requires Java3D, a Java API that provides interfaces for 3D drawing.

Windows and Unix

Visit:
http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/3D/download.html
to download Java3D. Select the platform for which you wish to download Java3D, and continue.

Linux

Visit Sun's Java3D for Linux site. Download Java3D and follow the given instructions to install.

3.) Restart your web browser

After completing these steps, Java3D should be set on your system! Visit http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/jmv/demo/jmv-0.85/JMV.html to test it out.
