Military engineer; born in
Greenwich, Mass., in 1818; graduated at
West Point in 1841.
Before the
Civil War he was engaged, as topographical engineer, in ascertaining the northern boundary between New York and
Vermont, and was an assistant of the Mexican boundary commission in 1849.
Early in 1861 he was made chief engineer on the staff of
General McDowell, and was in the
first battle of Bull Run.
In April. 1862, he was on
General McClellan's staff, and was made brigadier-general of volunteers.
He was assigned to duty at
Washington as commander of the defences of that city.
Having asked to be sent to the field, his division was assigned to the 9th Corps.
He fought gallantly at
Fredericksburg and
Chancellorsville, and was

mortally wounded in battle at the latter place, dying in
Washington, D. C., May 7, 1863.
