Prohibition party.
The question of prohibiting the sale of intoxicating liquors was agitated in various sections of the United States before a political party was formed distinctly on that issue. State legislation has at different times attempted prohibition in Maine, Kansas, Iowa, and other States. A distinctive national party was organized in 1869, and in 1872 it nominated a candidate for President. It has put a ticket in the field in all succeeding Presidential campaigns, among others St. John in 1884, Fisk in 1888, Bidwell in 1892, Levering in 1896, and Woolley in 1900. It has received no electoral [307] votes and has carried no congressional districts, though it has polled a popular vote of several hundred thousand. Besides its characteristic plank, it has advocated in its platforms some principles held either by the Democratic or by the People's party. In 1900 there was a marked increase in the popular vote of this party.protection
