Nantucket

islands off the south coast of Massachusetts, and belonging to that State, the former containing 60, the latter 120 square miles; first noted by Captain Gosnold, 1602, and first settled by some people under Thomas Mayhew from Watertown, Mass., 1643. Both islands in earlier days were famous for their skilled seamen and large business in whale-fishery.
