Delano, Columbus, 1809-1896
Statesman; born in Shoreham, Vt., June 5, 1809; settled in Mount Vernon, O., in 1817; admitted to the bar in 1831, and became prominent as a criminal lawyer. He was a member of Congress in 1844-64 and 1866-68; was appointed United States commissioner of internal revenue in 1869, and later by reorganizing the bureau increased the receipts in eight months more than 100 per cent.; and was Secretary of the Department of the Interior in 1870-75. He died in Mount Vernon, O., Oct. 23, 1896.
