Craven, Thomas Tingley 1808-1887

Naval officer; born in Washington, D. C., Dec. 30, 1808; entered the United States navy as midshipman in 1822, and was made captain June 7, 1861. A year later he became commodore. He materially assisted in the reduction of the forts on the Mississippi below New Orleans (May, 1862) and the destruction of the Confederate flotilla there. He had been lieutenant-commander of the flag-ship Vincennes in Wilkes's exploring expedition in 1838-42, and was instructor of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1851-55. In 1866 (Oct. 10) he was made a rear-admiral; in 1868-69 was in command of the North Pacific squadron; and in 1869 was retired. He died in Boston, Aug. 23, 1887.
