Cooper, Samuel 1798-1876

Military officer; born in Hackensack, N. J., June 12, 1798; graduated at the United States Military Academy in 1815; brevetted colonel for services in the Mexican War; and became adjutant-general of the army. In March, 1861, he resigned and entered the Confederate army, becoming adjutant-general and inspector-general. He published A concise system of instructions and regulations for the militia and volunteers of the United States. He died in Cameron, Va., Dec. 3, 1876.
