General orders, no. 1.

Hdqrs. Army of the Mississippi, Corinth, Miss., March 30, 1862.
The following officers are announced as chiefs of their respective de. partments of the general staff of this army. They will be obeyed and respected as such:

Col. Thomas Jordan, assistant adjutant-general, department of orders.

Brig. Gen. J. E. Slaughter, acting inspector-general.

Maj. Eugene E. McLean, Quartermaster's Department C. S. Army, in department of supplies and means of transportation.

Maj. A. J. Smith, chief of the pay department.

Lieut. Col. R. B. Lee, chief of subsistence department.

Surg. A. J. Foard, medical director.

Maj. J. F. Gilmer, C. S. Engineer Corps, chief of engineers.

Capt. H. Oladowski, chief of ordnance.

Braxton Bragg, Major-General, Chief of Staff.

I. Martial law is hereby established at Jackson and Grenada, in the State of Mississippi, and their respective environs for a circuit of 5 miles. The inspector-general, Brigadier-General Slaughter, will appoint suitable persons at each place to act as provost-marshals, and will give the necessary instructions to these officers for their Government.

General Maxey, commanding at Chattanooga, reports the enemy in force — infantry and cavalry — at Shelbyville and Manchester. I have ordered the only armed regiment at this place to Chattanooga.
