Campus Scelerātus
A place within the walls of Rome, near the Porta Collina, where Vestal Virgins who had lost their chastity were buried alive (Liv.viii. 15). It was unlawful to bury the dead within the city, or to slay a vestal; but both these restrictions were evaded by a living entombment. See Festus, s. v. probrum; Domit. 8; Epist. iv. 11; Mayor on Juv.iv. 10; and the article Vestales.
