στάδιος [α^], α, ον, （ἵστημι)
A.standing fast and firm, ς. ὑσμίνη close fight, fought hand to hand, Il.13.314,713, cf. Th.4.38; ἐνὶ σταδίῃ (sc. ὑσμίνῃ) Il.7.241, cf. 13.514; “ἡ ς. μάχη” Ath.6.273f, cf. σταδαῖος; [πῖδαξ] σταδίη μένει, of a spring from which no water flows, Opp.C.4.326.
2. firm, fixed, “θάλαμοι” Pi.O.5.13: τὸ ς. immobility, D.C.39.43.
3. standing upright or straight, ς. χιτών,= ὀρθοστάδιον, an ungirt tunic hanging in straight plaits, Call.Fr.59, cf. στατός; θώραξ ς. a stiff breastplate, plate-armour, opp. στρεπτός or ἁλυσιδωτός, A.R.3.1226 (v. Sch.).
