λα_ο-φόρος and λεωφόρος , ον,
A.bearing people, λαοφόρον καθ᾽ ὁδόν on a highway, thoroughfare, Il.15.682; “λαοφόρου ἐπέβησαν . . κελεύθου” Theoc.25.155; ὑπὲρ τῶν μάλιστα λεωφόρων (v.l. λαοφ-) πυλέων over the gates of greatest thoroughfare, Hdt.1.187.
2. Subst., λ. (sc. ὁδός), ἡ, highway, “τὰς λεωφόρους μὴ βαδίζειν” Pythag. ap. Porph.VP42, Ael.VH4.17, cf. Iamb.Protr. 21.δ́, D.L.8.17; “λεωφόρους πρὸς ἐκτροπάς” E.Rh.881 (λαοφ- codd.; λεωφόρου from the highway, cj. Vater); “τῶν ἐκ τῆς χώρας λ. εἰς τὴν πόλιν . . τεταμένων” Pl.Lg.763c, cf. Ph.1.16, Paus.9.2.2, Jul.Or.6.184d, 7.225c, and v. λεώβατος.
