A.undertaking, attempt, esp. of a military enterprise, Th.7.47, X.HG1.2.6, Isoc.2.8, etc.; “μανικὸν ἐ. ἐπιχειρεῖν” Pl. Alc.1.113c ; “πολλὴ μωρία καὶ τοῦ ἐ.” Id.Prt.317a.
2. base of operations against, “κατὰ Κύπρου” App.Syr.52.
II. in the Logic of Arist., attempted, i.e. dialectical proof, opp. a demonstrative syllogism (φιλοσόφημα), Top.162a16, etc.: so in Rhet., [Cic.]ad Herenn.2.2.2, D.H. Din.6, Is.16, Demetr.Lac.1055.18 F, Hermog.Inv.3.4, Gal.5.221, etc.; περὶ -ημάτων, title of work by Minucianus.
