ἔνδοξ-ος , ον, (δόξα)
A.held in esteem or honour, of high repute, πρός τινος by one, X.Oec.6.10 codd. (Sup.); “-ότατοι ποιηταί” Id.Mem.1.2.56; πόλις -οτέρα εἰς τὰ πολεμικά ib.3.5.1; νέοι πλούσιοι καὶ ἔ. Pl.Sph. 223b; “μὴ πλουσιώτερος ἀλλ᾽ -ότερος” Isoc.1.37; “ὀλίγοι καὶ ἔ. ἄνδρες” Arist.EN1098b28, cf. Epicur.Sent.7, etc.
2. of things, notable, “πράγματα” Aeschin.3.231, cf. Diod.Com.2.21; generally approved, τὸ καλόν, = τὸ ἔ., Epicur.Fr.513; glorious, “ταφαί” Plu.Per.28; “ἡδὺ καὶ ἔ. καὶ ὠφέλιμον” Id.2.99f. Adv. -ξως, freq. in Inscrr., SIG442.7 (Erythrae, iii B. C.), etc., cf. Vit.Philonid.p.12C., Plu.Alc.1, etc.: Comp. “-οτέρως, τὰ ἔνδοξα ἐ. λέγειν” Hermog.Id.1.9; also στῆλαι ἔχουσαι ἐπιγραφὰς -ξως conspicuously placed, Sammelb.6152.22 (i B. C.): Sup. “-ότατα, ἐβουλεύσασθε” D.18.65.
II. resting on opinion, probable, generally admitted, ἔ. τὰ δοκοῦντα πᾶσιν ἢ τοῖς πλείστοις ἢ τοῖς σοφοῖς, opp. to what is necessarily true (τὰ πρῶτα καὶ ἀληθῆ), Arist. Top.100b21, cf. EN1145b5, Rh.1355a17, al.; ἡ ἔ. διδασκαλία popular teaching, Gal.2.247.
2. Adv. -ξως, συλλογίζεσθαι plausibly, opp. ἀληθῶς, Arist.SE175a31.
III. conceited, οὐκ ἔνδοξοι πρὸς τὸ μαθεῖν ἃ μὴ ἴσμεν not too proud to learn, Erot.Fr.60.
