ἀπεικ-άζω , fut.
A.“-άσομαι” X.Mem.3.11.1, “-άσω” Plu.2.1135a:—Pass., aor. “ἀπεικάσθην” E.El.979, Pl.Cra.419d: fut. “-ασθήσομαι” Them.Or.2.33a: pf. “ἀπείκασμαι” Pl.Cra.420d (on the augment v. εἰκάζω):—form from a model, represent, express, copy, of painters, “ἀ τὰ καλὰ τῶν ζῴων” Isoc.1.11; “τὸ σὸν χρῶμα καὶ σχῆμα” Pl.Cra.432b, cf. Criti.107d, 107e; “διὰ χρωμάτων ἀ.” X.Mem.3.10.1; “χρώμασι καὶ σχήμασιν” Arist.Po.1447a19: metaph., ἀ. ἑαυτόν τινι conform oneself to . ., Pl.R.396d:—Pass., become like, resemble, τινί ib.563a, Cra.419c; ἀπεικασθεὶς θεῷ in a god's likeness, E.El.979.
2. express by a comparison, “ἔχοιμ᾽ ἂν αὐτὸ μὴ κακῶς ἀπεικάσαι” S.Fr.149.2, cf. Pl.Tht.169b; “οἷος γὰρ Ἀχιλλεὺς ἐγένετο ἀπεικάσειεν ἄν τις Βρασίδαν” Id.Smp.221c; τὸ θάλλειν τὴν αὔξην μοι δοκεῖ ἀπεικάζειν τὴν τῶν νέων the word θάλλειν seems to express the growth . ., Id.Cra.414a; ἀ. διὰ τοῦ ῥῶ to express by the sound of ῥ, ib. 426e:—Pass., to be copied or expressed by likeness “τοῖς ὑπὸ τῶν κάτω ἀπεικασθεῖσι” Id.R.511a; τὰ ἄλλα ἀπείργαστο εἰς ὁμοιότητα ᾧπερ (sc. “τούτου ᾠ̔̂ ἀπεικάζετο” Id.Ti.39e; ἀ. πρός τι to be copied in reference to . ., i. e. from . ., ib.29c.
3. liken, compare with, “τινί τι” E.Supp. 146, Pl.Phd.76e, Grg.493b, Smp.221d, al.; οὐ τοιοῦτόν ἐστιν ᾡ σὺ ἀπεικάζεις not such [as that] to which you compare it, Id.Phd.92b:— Pass., to be likened or compared, “ἄρχουσιν” Id.Lg.905e, al.; [“τὸ ἀναγκαῖον] ἀπείκασται τῇ πορείᾳ” Id.Cra.420d; [τὸ ψεῦδος] ἀπείκασται τοῖς καθεύδουσι ib.421b.
II. ὡς ἀπεικάσαι, = ὡς ἐπεικάς αι, as one may guess, to conjecture, S.OC16, Tr.141, E.Or.1298.
