II. c. inf., refuse, decline to do, “ἠναίνετο λοιγὸν ἀμῦναι” Il.18.450; “ἕζεσθαι μὲν ἀνήνατο” 23.204; and with pleon. neg., ἀναίνετο μηδὲν ἑλέσθαι he declined to take anything, 18.500; “οὐκ ἀναίνομαι θανεῖν” A.Ag.1652, cf. Supp.801; εἰ . . ἀναίνεται εἰ ἐγὼ ἔσομαι ὑὸς Μενεκλέους repudiates the prospect of my being . . , Is.2.27.
