I. c.acc., enwrap, enfold, of garments, Il.2.262; of a coffin, “ἀ. ὀστέα” 23.91; ἐπὴν πόλις ἀμφικαλύψῃ δουράτεον μέγαν ἵππον received within it, Od.8.511, cf. 4.618; ἔρως φρένας ἀμφεκάλυψε love enfolded my senses, Il.3.442; “θάνατος δέ μιν ἀμφεκάλυψε” 5.68, cf. 12.116; “θανάτου δὲ μέλαν νέφος ἀμφεκάλυψε” 16.350; “ἀμφὶ δὲ ὄσσε κελαινὴ νὺξ ἐκάλυψε” 11.356; [“ὕπνος] βλέφαρ᾽ ἀμφικαλύψας” Od.5.493; of a wave, overwhelm, A.R.l.c.:—in Pass., “ἀμφικεκαλύφθαι ἀμφιέσμασι” Hp.Mul.2.133.
II. ἀ. τί τινι put round any one as a veil, cover, or shelter, “ἀ. σάκος τινί” Il.8.331; “νέφος τινί” 14.343; νύκτα μάχῃ ἀ. throw the mantle of night over the battle, 5.506; ὄρος πόλει ἀ. overshadow a city with a mountain, Od. 8.569.
III. after Hom., ἀ. τινά τινι surround one with, “φύλλοις κνήμας” Batr. 161, cf. Opp.H.1.746:—Pass., ἀμφεκαλύφθη κρᾶτα λέοντος χάσματι he had his head covered with lion's jaws, E.HF361.
