A.piece of wood cut off, lath, splinter, “σχίζῃ δρυός” Od.14.425, cf. Ar.Pax 1032: pl., wood cleft small, esp. firewood, καῖε δ᾽ ἐπὶ σχίζῃς [τοὺς μηρούς] Il.1.462, cf. PCair.Zen.191.5 (iii B.C.), IG 22.1366.11; “τὰ μὲν . . σχίζῃσιν ἀφύλλοισιν κατέκαιον” Il.2.425.
