ἐπαρκ-έω , fut. -έσω (v. infr.): Ep. aor. inf.
A.“ἐπαρκέσσαι” A.R.2.1161, cf. IG5(1).730.18:—to be strong enough for a thing, in Hom. always of cases of danger or injury: 1. c. acc. rei et dat. pers., ward off something from one, “οὐδέ τί οἱ τό γ᾽ ἐπήρκεσε λυγρὸν ὄλεθρον” Il.2.873; “οὔτε τι Τηλέμαχος τό γ᾽ ἐπήρκεσεν” Od.17.568; “οὐδὲν γὰρ αὐτῳ ταῦτ᾽ ἐπαρκέσει τὸ μὴ οὐ πεσεῖν” prohibebit quominus . ., A.Pr.918.
2. c. acc. rei, ward off, prevent, “ἐπαρκέσσαι κακότητα” A.R.2.1161; σέ τοι μόνον δέδορκα πημονάν (Reiske for ποιμένων）“ἐ.” S.Aj. 360 (lyr.).
3. c. dat. pers. only, help, assist, Thgn.871, Hdt.1.91, Lys.13.93, 1 Ep.Ti.5.10, etc.: rarely c. acc. pers., E.Or.803 (troch.): abs., τίς ἄρ᾽ ἐπαρκέσει; who will aid? A. Th.91 (anap.), cf. S.OC777.
II. supply, furnish, “ἄκος δ᾽ οὐδὲν ἐπἤρκεσαν, τὸ μὴ πόλιν . . παθεῖν” A.Ag.1170 (lyr.); “ἐ. τινί τι” Pl.Prt. 321a, cf. Ar.Pl.830, LXX 1 Ma.11.35, etc.; also ἐ. τινὶ τῶν ἑαυτοῦ impart to him a share of . ., X.Mem.1.2.60: c. dat. rei, supply with, “πέπλοις” E.Cyc.301.
III. abs., to be sufficient, enough, “ὅσσον ἐπαρκεῖ” Sol.5.1 (v.l. ἀπαρκεῖ）; ἐπαρκέσει νόμος ὅδ᾽ this law shall prevail, S.Ant.612(lyr.).
2. stand to the credit of, c. dat., “γενεᾷ” Pi.N.6.60.
