ὁ ἀλεκτρυὼν τῆς σελήνης ἀνισχούσης ἐνθουσιᾷ φασι καὶ σκιρτᾷ. ἥλιος δὲ ἀνίσχων οὐκ ἄν ποτε αὐτὸν διαλάθοι, ᾠδικώτατος δὲ ἑαυτοῦ ἐστι τηνικάδε. πυνθάνομαι δὲ ὅτι ἄρα καὶ τῇ Λητοῖ φίλον ἐστὶν ὁ ἀλεκτρυὼν τὸ ὄρνεον. τὸ δὲ αἴτιον, παρέστη φασὶν αὐτῇ τὴν διπλῆν τε καὶ μακαρίαν ὠδῖνα ὠδινούσῃ. ταῦτά τοι καὶ νῦν ταῖς τικτούσαις ἀλεκτρυὼν πάρεστι, καὶ δοκεῖ πως εὐώδινας ἀποφαίνειν. τῆς δὲ ὄρνιθος ἀπολωλυίας, ἐπῳάζει αὐτός, καὶ ἐκλέπει τὰ ἐξ ἑαυτοῦ νεόττια σιωπῶν: οὐ γὰρ ᾄδει τότε θαυμαστῇ τινι καὶ ἀπορρήτῳ αἰτίᾳ, ναὶ μὰ τόν: δοκεῖ γάρ μοι συγγινώσκειν ἑαυτῷ θηλείας ἔργα καὶ οὐκ ἄρρενος δρῶντι τηνικάδε. μάχῃ δὲ ἀλεκτρυὼν καὶ τῇ πρὸς ἄλλον ἡττηθεὶς ἀγωνίᾳ οὐκ ἂν ᾄσειε: τὸ γάρ τοι φρόνημα αὐτῷ κατέσταλται, καὶ καταδύεταί γε ὑπὸ τῆς αἰδοῦς. κρατήσας δὲ γαῦρός ἐστι, καὶ ὑψαυχενεῖ, καὶ
