then entered each house in detail. Some of the scenes were revolting. Every male in the block was arrested and confined in the jail till morning, when they had a hearing by Marshal Alexander, assisted by Lts. Turner, Emack, and Semple.--The liquor found thus was poured into the streets, barrels were taken to the receiving stere, and receipts given. Deserters were yesterday sent to their regiments. Shirkers from militia duty handled, and some very bad characters detained. The squad of prisoners arrested amounted to 80. Many were provided with British Consul papers; those were released after being identified. Lieut. Turner, C. S. A., and Mr. James Thomas, of the 1st Maryland regiment, deserve much credit for their energy and coolness. Yesterday, besides several soldiers arrested for drunkenness, Reuben T. Sale, an itinerant orator; William Them, a German; and Saul Eaton, sewing machine man, were taken in custody on charges, the nature of which were not learned by us on inquiry.

prove unsuccessful. By such times and such circumstances we are now surrounded. We are left to infer that nothing has occurred for public interest, or the public, always anxious and sometimes imperious, would be made aware of it. By way of variety we publish this morning the report of the Federal General, Currently of the battle on the Arkansas line. There are of a victory, from which we informed at the commanding officer of the Union was not a little delighted when he decided that the rebel army had withdrawn the direction of Boston Mountain. He was a heavy loss. The blow, no doubt, a severe one to the hireling subjugators. We claims a victory, but evidently feels that the more such victories would rid the same soil of Missouri and Arkansas from its preservers. The Herald beseechingly urges the Federal authorities to turn their attention to the connection of iron-clad steamers. It fears the ever of the Virginia and thinks something to be done to check her career.
