Their conduct in the field redounds to their honor; but the end of the campaign is that Washington, instead of Richmond is beleaguered, and Maryland, instead of Virginia, exposed to invasion. It does not appear, indeed, that a single sore of Virginian soil is now held by Federal troops, except on the very brink of the Potomac itself, and evederates, and it is not unlikely that McClellan, who seems given to engineering, and who now commands at the capital may do better behind these fortifications than he did in an aggressive campaign.
