Sir: I inclose for the information of the Department a copy of a confidential cipher telegram from General Sherman to Captain Pennock, dated nine P. M.., November third.
Lieutenant-Commander Shirk was here to-day, and reports too little water in the Tennessee for the Peosta, a tin-clad, with a good battery, now at Paducah, and waiting for the rise in the rectfully yours, S. P. Lee, Acting Rear-Admiral, Commanding Mississippi Squadron. Hon. Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, Washington, D. C.

I don't know what boats you have up the Tennessee now, but hear that No. 55 has been captured by Forrest.
