A Desperate Character. --A man calling himself Lieut. J. J. Cox was arrested a few days since by order of the civil authorities of Tennessee and sent on to this city for confinement in Castle Thunder. Cox has been before under arrest by the Confederate authorities, but managed to make his escape, and it is said visited the Federal lines.--When last arrested there was on his person a large number of forged passes and commissions for various purposes — some empowering him to arrest Confederate deserters, recruit for the service, &c. He is now where it is likely some time of his life will be spent.

From East Tennessee. Morristown, Feb. 4. --A scouting party from the neighborhood of Cumberland Gap, states that Wilcox's ninth army corps has been mustered out of service and gone home, very few having re-enlisted, not withstanding the large bounties and land warrants offered them. The enemy's cavalry force has thus been very much diminished.
