Protection of strangers in New York. --A bill is now before the New York Legislature for the better protection of strangers and citizens in the city of New York, and to incorporate the New York Passenger and Baggage Train Company. It is evident that a law should be passed which shall proffer the unwary stranger and the defenceless citizen a sure protection from the impositions of hack drivers, and often from ruffianly violence.

Wait for the reaction. The Connecticut election has come and gone, and instead of the reaction we were taught to anticipate, the Republican tide is rising higher and higher. We are standing upon the margin of the Mississippi and waiting, before we cross, for the waters to subside. Well may a Northern journal, which was hopeful of the result in Connecticut--a State which lies so near the conservative city of New York as to fell somewhat the pressure of its public opinion — now exclaim ? "The day of a wholesome Northern Union reaction is still in the future ! Will it ever come ? We cannot answer,"--And still Virginia waits and waits, and lingers on the brink of Jordan, and fears to enter the promised land, and believes that there are giants there, and hesitates to grasp the clusters of Canaan which are dancing before her eyes, and even thinks of turning back to wander in the wilderness for forty years, and at last lay her bones in the desert.
