to hold fast by favors and grants of Southern estates. With the army he will make good all the votes cast for himself in this manner, and he will, more than probably, overawe the polls in some States not in rebellion. If Lincoln gets the border States, and the revolted States, partly under the Federal military authority, he has to start upon: Maryland 7, Kentucky 14, Missouri 11, Kansas 3, Tennessee 10, West Virginia 5, Louisiana 7--54. To these we may add: Colorado 3, Nebraska 3, and Nevada 3--as they are newly fledged States, still under the dominion of Lincoln officials, whose grasp upon them is not yet loosed. This would give him, to start with, sixty-three votes. The remaining States of the United States give a vote of two hundred and thirty-one. To secure him a majority of all the votes cast, he would have to get from these remaining States eighty-five votes.--Now, the question is as to his ability to get those eighty-five votes. If his army sustains no great reverse b
