L. Worden. The Shenandoah, originally called the Sea King, was the last and the most dangerous of all the Confederate cruisers. She was a full-rigged ship of about eight hundred tons, with so-called auxiliary steam power, and very fast under either sail or steam, capable of making three hundred and twenty miles in twenty-four hours under favorable circumstances, which exceeded the speed of any vessel in the U. S. Navy. On the 8th of October, 1864, the Sea King cleared from London for Bombay. As she was not equipped for war purposes, there was no question in regard to her; but the same day she sailed, the steamer Laurel cleared from Liverpool for Nassau, with several Confederate naval officers and a cargo of cases marked Machinery, but containing guns and their equipments. Near Madeira, the Sea King received her armament and stores from the Laurel, and was transferred by her master, who had a power of sale from her owner, to Commander James J. Waddell, of the Confederate Navy,

soon the Java's mizzen-mast was shot away. The lire of the Java now ceased, and Bainbridge was under the impression that she had struck her colors. He had fought about two hours, and occupied an hour in repairing damages, when he saw an ensign fluttering over the Java. Bainbridge was preparing to renew the conflict, when the Java's colors were hauled down and she was surrendered. She was bearing as passenger to the East Indies Lieutenant-General Hyslop (just appointed governor-general of Bombay) and his staff, and more than 100 English officers and men destined for service in the East Indies. the Java was a wreck, and the Constitution's sails were very much riddled. The commander of the Java was mortally wounded. Her officers and crew numbered about 446. Some of the above-described passengers assisted in the contest. me, also, the British government occasionally employed her as a transport ship. In 1867 she was again fitted up for a passenger vessel to ply between New York and Europe; sailed for New York March 26, 1867, with accommodations for 2,000 firstclass passengers, and returned with 191, and was immediately seized by the seamen as security for their unpaid wages. After this matter was adjusted, the vessel was leased by a cable construction company. She laid the French Atlantic telegraph cable in 1869; went to the Persian Gulf and laid the cable from Bombay to Suez in 1870; in 1873 laid the fourth Atlantic telegraph cable; in 1874 laid the fifth, and was further used to some extent in cable construction. When there seemed to be no more use for her in that line, she was made to serve as a show. After the vessel had been tried by the government as a coal barge, and proved too unwieldy to do good service, she was condemned to be broken up and sold as junk. Great Lakes and the Navy, the
