Beef would be much cheaper, and our commons are generally covered with grazing cows, which might be slaughtered in lieu of our valuable mules. As to the eating of dog meat on Belle Isle by the privates, we would not be surprised if there was some truth in it. Two years ago, when Blenker's Dutch brigade marched through Clarke and Warren counties, dog meat was a speciality with them, and they permitted no innocent cur to pass with impunity. Some of Blenker's men may be on Belle Isle. But to the statement of the escaped prisoners: These prisoners confirm in every particular the statements heretofore made of the treatment of Federal prisoners there. The rations of the officers were about the same as those of the rebel privates; but our privates on Belle Island did not fare so well. As long as the boxes sent from friends at the North were delivered, they lived as well as could be expected under the circumstances
Gone North. --By flag of truce boat, which left City Point yesterday afternoon, the following prisoners, who were confined in the Libby prison, were sent North: Major A. B. Wade, 73d Indians; Lieutenant E. J. Doughty, Quartermaster 51st, do; Surgeon J. T. Galloupe, 17th Mass; Assistant Surgeons R. T. Baker, 12th N. Y. cavalry; and A. Robinson, 16th Illinois cavalry; Privates Thos. J. Baker, 9th N. Y.; W. H. Tillson, 84th Illinois, and E. J. Goodwin, 89th Illinois. From Castle Thunder the following persons were sent North by the same boat: S. S. Bulkley, Reporter for the New York Herald; Mrs. Mary Jane Johnson, sent from Belle Isle some time since, and captured in Federal uniform in Tennessee; F. Murtaugh, Sutler's Clerk in the Yankee army; and citizens D. Hackendorn, John Watson, E. P. Matthews, and Pat C. Coghlan.
