ad of the column, proceeded on the Dover road, arresting all persons who saw us, and directed the march, so as to arrive at Stevens' Ford, a point (10) ten miles from Newbern, and two miles from the outpost of the enemy, after dark, where we encamped without fires until one o'clock Monday morning, the 1st instant, at which time I moved forward, and captured all the outposts, but not without being hailed and fired upon. I moved down the road with all possible speed, in order to reach Batchelor's Creek before the bridge could be taken up, but upon reaching the point, found they had been alarmed by the firing of the pickets, and had taken up the bridge. Here I lost a number of men killed and wounded. The enemy at this point were strongly entrenched, and also had a block-house erected. To avoid the loss of men by storming, I threw some trees across the creek, and crossed two regiments over under command of Colonel Mercer of the Twenty-first Georgia regiment, with orders to move up

second in command at Plymouth, reported to me in person, that General Hoke informed General Wessells and himself, that the works I had constructed, since Pickett's demonstration at Newbern in February, saved that place from attack at that time. The works referred to are those pronounced unnecessary by General Butler. In my correspondence, the belief is uniformly expressed that. the Confederates would attempt to drive us from Eastern North Carolina. In February, Pickett attacked Batchelor's Creek, Croatan, Havelock, Newport, and other places, threatening Newbern. Other plans were interfered with, or delayed. The loss of Plymouth and Little Washington was promptly followed by a campaign for Newbern. The following letter is pertinent and verifies my prediction. May 3, 1864. General: I have just heard from Captain Cook, commanding the iron-clad Albemarle, who writes that he feels satisfied that the boat can stand the Sound, and will be with us. I will move at six o'clock
The reconnaissance to Newbern. The reconnaissance to Newbern under Gen. Pickett proved very successful. Our forces left Kinston on Sunday morning last. On Monday morning they encountered the enemy at Batchelor's Creek, seven miles from Newbern, and here, in laying down the pontoons for the Confederates to cross, Col. Shaw and three privates, of the 8th N. C. regiment, were killed, and fifteen wounded. The enemy were driven from here, as stated yesterday in the official telegram. All the other particulars of this fight were given in Gen. Pickett's telegram yesterday. A good many rumors were afloat that the town of Newbern had been invested, but none of them are as yet true. On the contrary, an official dispatch has been received that our forces under Gen. Pickett have returned to Kinston. They succeeded in bringing off safely all the captures mentioned in the telegram yesterday.
gia regiment in the year 1861, and was attached to Ewell's corps. He participated in the battle of Winchester, Va., and was highly complimented by his commanding General in his official report of the battle of Cross-Keys. He also bore a conspicuous part in the battiest of Malvern Hill, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. --On the 20th January, 1864, he was attached to Hoke's brigade, and was with the brigade on the late exception against Newbern, and acted very gauntly at the battle of Batchelor's Creek, and was afterwards assigned to the command of all the cavalry in this department. In the expedition against Plymouth he was in command of his own regiment, and during the attack upon the town was in command of Hoke's brigade, and tell during the charge upon Fort Sanderson, which was taken a few minutes after his fail. The remains of Col. Mercer arrived here on Wednesday night last, and was interred in the Episcopal Cemetery by the side of the late and lamented Gen. W. D. Pender,
