St. John, John Pierce 1833-
Lawyer; born in Brookville, Ind., Feb. 25, 1833; was educated in Indiana; served in the Union army during the Civil War, attaining the rank of lieutenant-colonel; was elected to the Kansas State Senate in 1872, and governor of Kansas in 1879; and was the Prohibition candidate for President of the United States in 1884, receiving 151,809 popular votes.
In 1900 he supported Mr. Bryan for President, and while claiming independence in politics, is an advocate of the free coinage of both gold and silver, prohibition, and woman suffrage.
