The Mayor, yesterday, ordered punishment to be bestowed on Shadrack, slave of Crew & Timberlake, for beating his wife, Maria, slave of Robert Howard, on Sunday night.
Mayor thought no larceny had been committed, and acquitted the party. Robert, slave of D. M. Summers, arrested for smoking a pipe in the street, was ordered 10 lashes for violating a city ordinance. George Plauty was arraigned for getting drunk and breaking down the door of Mr. George Brent, on Broad street, Wednesday evening. The complainant did not appear, but Plauty having been arrested once before for a similar freak was committed for want of surety for his good behavior. Shadrack, slave of S. Walke, Bob, slave of P. Roberts, and Charles, slave of Dr. Price, all boys, were arraigned for fighting in the street, and were ordered a small licking for so doing. The case of Mike Barry, charged with assisting to rob Lieut. Warren S. r. Marcellus Starke; and George, slave of Mr. John C. Hobsen, were before the Mayor yesterday morning, charged with stealing thirteen chickens from a negro named Shadrack. These negroes seem to have been a regularly organized band of chicken thieves, doing business on a large scale. They were caught by officers Griffin and Moore on Sunday together in a house on Marshall street, near St. James Church. In the house were found Shadrack's chickens in the act of being picked and dressed, a revolver and a long double-barrel pistol, both heavily loaded; a large assortment of burglar's tools, a grain bag of feathers, and a long military great coat much besmeared with blood. One of the crow bars fitted into the dints in the door of Shadrack's hen house, which had been broken open. In an out house in the yard was found about a bushel of chicken heads, feet and offal. The proprietor of this house, another negro, was lying in bed and pretended to be very ill. When the police took the neg
