[Read before the Medford Historical Society, October 19, 1903.] OUR interest in the subject of this sketch is not only that she represents one of the famous women of her time, but she also appeals to us from her connection with the justly celebrated school for young ladies, which for a brief period was located in the Medford of one hundred years ago. It has been interesting to trace as nearly as possible the fortunes of those of her pupils in whom we have a local interest, and to give a brief outline of the life of one who wielded such an influence upon them. Elias Nason, her biographer says: Mrs. Susanna Rowson was one of the most remarkable women of her day. Her life is as romantic as any creation of her gifted pen, and is a beautiful illustration of the potency of a large, glowing heart, and a determined will to rise superior to circumstance and achieve success.
