gstreet is delaying hostile operations while awaiting reinforcements from Virginia. The enemy made a diversion on Wednesday upon our position over the river, but after an hour's fight were driven back. On Wednesday a detachment of the 2d Michigan made a gallant charge and captured a rebel rifle-pits within five hundred yards of our works. We subsequently were compelled to give way to a superior force, with great loss. Maj. Bessangton was taken prisoner, Adjutant Noble and Lieut. Salpin were killed, and Lt. Col. Cormick, of the 17th Michigan, died on Friday from wounds received. Affairs have been comparatively quiet for the last two days. It is raining slightly this morning.
