Garroting.
--Yesterday morning a man who gave his name as John Shaughnessy, and who had British protection papers in his pocket, appeared before the Mayor to answer the charge of garroting Philip L. Gregory, and robbing him of $87 in notes and a silver watch.
When captured, the accused had on his coat collar the number of stripes usually worn by a Lieutenant in the Confederate service; but after officers Perrin and Morris locked him up he tore off the stripes, and then denied that he had ever worn them.
The prisoner declared his entire innocence of the crime; but the fact that he had more than one name was very much against him. Owing to the indisposition of Gregory the investigation was adjourned till Monday, the prisoner, in the meantime, giving his name to the Hustings Court as William Getz, and professing to be a deserter from company G, 7th Louisiana regiment.
Yankee clothing.
--Whilst executing a search warrant yesterday at a clothing store on Broad street, officer Perrin discovered seven Yankee uniform coats and nine pairs of pants that had been improperly disposed of. The Mayor will probably investigate the matter, and endeavor to ascertain how these goods found their way into a clothing store.
