C. regiment, was on guard in front of Castle Thunder, and had some words wof the battalion who was coming out of the prison, where he had been on business. Shortly after Newsom, being off duty, but having his market with him, was passing the parade ground of that portion oltercation occurred between him and Martin Gripp, of co. in which Gripp struck him in the face. Newsom sprung back and, taking aim at his antagonist, fired the ball, striking him in the breast and tewels of private Richard Morris, of company D, who was standing near, inflicting a mortal wound. Newsom then ran a few steps, but was overtaken by two of the battalion and lodged in Castle Thunder. Tgle shot was a short Mississippi rifle. Morris was not expected to survive through last night. Newsom, after being placed in confinement at the Castle, expressed much regret at the damage he had don
