ated press inquired at the State Department to-day about the current statements of Mr. Seward's having been consulted by Mr. Buchanan in the closing period of his administration. Also, about startling hostile announcements having been made by Mr. Mercier to the Secretary of State, and about protracted and adjourned and anxious meetings of the Cabinet, involving serious military and Cabinet changes. The Secretary simply replied to the inquiry that the alleged consultations between himself and Mr. Buchanan were imaginary.
