left. Shortly after, an attack was made on the left of the Second corps, near the Armstrong house, on the Duncan road, but the enemy were repulsed with loss. General Meade was present on the field all day, but was not wounded, as was at first reported. Some of his staff had narrow escapes. The Tribune, commenting on the disacircumstances seemed favorable — but it is clear his intention has been thwarted by a failure in the execution of prescribed movements. It is the old story.
