The police. --The day police of the city, that in former times consulted only of Clement White and Wm. Byrd Page, owing to the growth of the city and the requirements of the times has been increased to eleven. We append a list of names of the present force, viz: Reuben T. Seal, R. H. Chalkley, B. M. Morris, Wm. N. Kelley, A. D. Quarles. M. Adams, W. T. Bibb, John A. Davis, John D Perrin, Caleb Crone, and Washington A. Griffin. The night watch comprises a force of forty men, who, by ordinance of the Council, are compelled to reside in the city. This force is officered as follows: Captain, James B. Pleasants, (elected by the people;) 1st Lieutenant, L. M. Carter; 2d Lieutenant, Theodore Baptist; 3d Lieutenant. Augustus R. Cousins.

Hustings Court. --Charles C. Pedrick, feloniously stabbing and killing John Massering, on the 15th of February, examined and sent on. Landon W. Shell, charged with the murder of Patrick Curtis, on the 5th of May, was examined and sent on. Owen Riley, resisting Wm. N. Kelley, a police officer, in the discharge of his duty, was found guilty and fined $5 and costs. Robert Burch, breaking and entering the shop of Joseph F. Dabney, and stealing $100 worth of boots and shoes, was sent on for felony. Wm. H. Zimmerman was fined $60 and costs for selling liquor, to be drunk where sold, without a license. John W. Butcher, free negro, charged with stealing two hams from Thomas W. Brockenbrough, was called, and a nolle prosequi entered. The prisoner was then remanded to the Mayor to be punished for petty larceny. Lewis, slave, stealing a cow from Wellington Goddin, was ordered 39 lashes. re adopted. A communication was read from the Mayor, making nominations of persons to compose the police organization for the ensuing year. For the office of Chief of Police the following nominations were made: Messrs. Reuben T. Seal, William N. Kelley, George L. Richards and E. H. Chalkley. On motion of Mr. Hill, Mr. Seal was unanimously elected to fill said office. Here followed a list of the Mayor's nominations for police officers, which were not materially changed from last yearoffice. nce, or postpone the investigation of the case until some future day. R. H. Meade stated that the reason Jones was not present was because he had been mustered out of the service and sent home. The name of Mrs. Sale was on the list of witnesses for the prosecution. Mr. Johnson furnished the Mayor with a list of the witnesses he desired to have summoned, and the Mayor sent officers to hunt them up. The list of witnesses for the defence was soon afterwards called, and officer William N. Kelley said they had all been summoned. All but four answered to their names. Mr. Johnson said he was ready to proceed with the investigation but for the absence of Mrs. Matthews. She was one of the original witnesses, and her presence was very material to the case. If the Court would defer the investigation for a day or two, Mrs. Ould would herself go for Mrs. Matthews, who was in the country, and bring her to the city.
