From Tappahannock and Layton's 1,325 negroes were taken, and, in fact, the country has been entirely stripped of its laboring population. Besides negroes, the Yankees took everything they could find in the way of private property — provisions, jewelry and money — and spared nothing which they could conveniently carry away.
