e. In the fields around were hundreds upon hundreds of graves, made principally since May last. When Johnston left Jackson he took away with him between fifty and sixty pieces of artillery; many of them were old and not very safe to use. At Vicksburg the Federal works are being leveled, and rebel fortifications put into a more perfect condition than they were before. A number of the finest guns are being mounted, and the place will be held as a first class military fortification. Jeff. Davis's house had been overhauled by some of the soldiers.
