Mr. Frothingham's History of Charlestown is invaluable. I have obtained less information from old manuscripts in Medford than I expected. edford declared that their rights and privileges had been infringed upon and that the Stamp Act had taken away their privileges as free-born Britons. They expressed unshaken loyalty to his present Majesty King George III., and great veneration to the august body of the British Parliament. They also expressed themselves ready to yield obedience to all laws of Parliament which were agreeable to their own constitution, but refused to obey them if any of their just liberties were taken away. Mr. Hall was further charged to be no ways aiding or assisting in the execution of said act, but to work diligently towards having the act repealed. Although the people of Medford desired to have the Stamp Act repealed, they did not approve of the violent means which the rioters of Boston used to obtain this result, as was shown by the following action: On Oct. 20, 1766, at 2 P. the oldest active fire company in the United States, of which fact the city of Medford may justly be proud. By their records I learn that at a meeting of the Selectmen of the town of Medford July 26, 1829, the following persons were appointed to form and constitute a Company of Hook and Ladder Men, agreeable to an act of the General Court for that purpose, passed June 11, 1829, viz.: John B. Fitch, N. H. Bishop, A. S. Kent, George W. Porter, Horatio A. Smith, John Stimson, Eph'm Tufts, Jos. P. Hall, B. Richardson, T. R. Peck, Ebenz'r Chamberlain, Dexter Harlow, Elisha Livermore, Azor Richardson, and Thomas Jameson. At the first meeting of the company, July 8, 1829, they organized by the choice of John B. Fitch as moderator and George W. Porter as clerk, and then voted to adopt the following Constitution as a form of government: Constitution of the Hook and Ladder Company of Medford, instituted July 8, 1829. Article 1. is chapter I quote a few lines: The increase of business, and the gathering of traders in the marketplace, became so great at the beginning of the century, that it was deemed advisable to appoint a clerk of the market. It became necessary to make rules and regulations regarding the conduct of affairs, and for the town by-laws on this subject see Medford Historical Regis-Ter, Vol. X, No. 2, page 53. Three clerks were appointed at a town meeting March 3, 1800, viz.: Nathan Wait, Sr., Joseph P. Hall and Ebenezer Williams, Sr. The next year two were appointed, and May I, 1843, we find the selectmen attending to the matter, when Samuel Blanchard was the appointee. His successors in office were John T. White, Nathan W. Wait, Thomas D. Rice, Timothy Rich, Stephen H. Bradlee, Isaac Sprague, Edward P. Alexander, Silas F. Wild, William A. Egery.
