in a leaky barn. We were off next morning early; passed Callahan's by breakfast time, and were at the Springs by noon. The rain continued and still continues. Our boys are in good condition, and the same may be said of the whole brigade. General Wise works night and day, and is indomitable in his efforts for increasing the efficiency of his troops. Look out for a decided movement on the Hessians of this part of Virginia soon. Everything betokens it. At the magnificent Hotel at this place, whilst asking for paper to invite a line, I was surprised to have it handed me by that capital caterer, Thompson Tyler, who is well known in Richmond; and I was glad to see that he had recovered from the wound received some time ago. When a ball perforates a man's cap about two inches apart in two places and cuts the skin of his cranium, it may be called a close business. The nights here are pleasant. Gen. Floyd is said not to be far off. His command are finely equipped. Vauxhall.
the first occasion of their drill they were informed by their commanding officer that ten per cent, of the white population was required to be represented in the field before the county could be exempted from the liability of a draft; one hundred was then wanting to complete that number, and unless they were speedily furnished the militia would be called out en masse. Under these circumstances many stepped forward and volunteered their services in the defence of their country; and I believe the quota of Botetourt, amounting to upwards of eight hundred, has been, or will be, furnished in a few days. Several companies belonging to Floyd's Brigade have passed through on their way to the Northwest, and also a troop from Tennessee who intended to join Gen. Wise at the White Sulphur. They were all fine looking men, and will doubtless afford material aid in driving the base minions of Lincoln from the sacred soil which they have polluted with their footsteps. Sharp-Shooter.
irginia is the Salines of Kanawha. Unfortunately, the Valley of the Kanawha is now in the hands of the enemy, Gen. Wise having been obliged to fall back to Lewisburg before a far superior force, and, as is also said, for want of ammunition. General Floyd has marched to a point four miles west of Lewisburg, and is ready to advance in conjunction with General Wise again into the Kanawha country; but is obliged to await his third regiment, which is detained at Bonsack's Depot, fifty miles west e rich and beautiful Valley of the Kanawha, with its prolific Saline, which has been overrun by Cox, is of primary importance. No portion of the State of equal extent is half so important, and we look with great interest to the operations of Generals Floyd and Wise. True, the salt of Kanawha would have to be wagoned eastward over the mountains; but it is comparatively a light article, and the turnpike roads from the Salines to Covington are very fine. They are the system of turnpike roads
