few minutes, then an interchange of tobacco for coffee, or a Dispatch for a Herald or Washington Star. It is conjectured here, and with apparent truth, that the enemy are withdrawing their forces from this side of the river. Their force is supposed to be composed of two brigades of infantry and a much larger force of cavalry. Absentees from the army are returning rapidly since the proclamation of President Davis. The ranks will soon be filled again. The many friends of Capt. R. A. Caskie will be gratified to learn that he has recently been promoted to the office of Major of the 10th Va. cavalry. He is an efficient officer, and the regiment is pleased with the appointment. The rumored appointment of Major-Gen. Hood as Lieut.-General of cavalry has caused quite a sensation in our cavalry division. Many of us have been surprised at reading letters in the Richmond papers' favorable to Gen. J. E. B. Stuart, and purporting to speak the sentiments of the entire cavalry
there, and fortifying himself, he will hope to supply his troops by the Roanoke river, or by rebuilding the Suffolk railroad. It remains to be seen how much of his excellent plan will be successfully accomplished. The raid on Stony creek. It will be recollected that, on the occasion of the recent raid on Stony creek, the Yankees were attacked and driven eight miles by our cavalry. The only portion of our forces engaged was the Tenth Virginia cavalry, under command of Lieutenant-Colonel R. A. Caskie, of this city. Our loss on the occasion was only twelve men wounded. Much credit is due to the gallant Tenth. The enemy's force consisted of two full brigades. From Georgia. The news from Georgia on yesterday was of a somewhat exciting character.--The enemy, who had been marching down the Ogechee river with three corps--one corps on the north and two on the south side — endeavored to unite their forces nearly opposite--, but met with considerable resistance from the
Mayor's Court. --Recorder Caskie officiated in this court yesterday. The following cases were disposed of: Frank Austin, charged with being drunk and using profane and vulgar language in the street — sent to the provost-marshal. Ann V. Jones, receiving a piece of bacon supposed to have been stolen — discharged. Cary Wormley, charged with stealing a pair of shoes, the property of J. M. Traylor — proved his innocence, but recognized as a witness against another party, who was sent on to the Hustings Court. Lewis Lawson, charged with assaulting and beating Sarah Schwartz — charge withdrawn by the payment of costs. Daniel Stewart, charged with unlawfully breaking the lock and entering the house of Mary Roach in the daytime — accusation unsustained and Stewart discharged. L. H. Luck, obstructing the sidewalk in Main street in conducting an auction sale — fined ten dollars.
