rs were Messrs. James T. Gray, Ryland Norvell and M. Jones. The Camp-fire last night. Over two hundred old veterans, a number of members of the First Virginia regiment and many invited guests assembled at the Regimental Armory last evening to enjoy the banquet given by Lee and Pickett Camps in honor of the anniversary of the birth of the beloved General Robert E. Lee. After the battle of knives and forks had ceased the following toasts were responded to: The Day we Celebrate, Colonel A. S. Buford; The Legislature, Senator H. G. Peters; Pickett Camp, Dr. Eggleston; Lee Camp, Captain J. B. McKinney; Richmond, Hon. J. Taylor Ellyson; The Undying Fame of Lee was to have been responded to by Rev. Dr. M. D. Jerome Cherry, of Portsmouth, Va.; Moss; White, of Portsmouth, Va.; Acting Assistant Surgeon J. R. Gildersleeve, of Richmond, Va.; Apothecaries Jett T. West and Sursdorff, of North Carolina. Among the staff were the following named gentlemen: John H. Claiborne, commissary; Colonel A. S. Buford, quartermaster; Paine and Kent, our commission merchants, and many others. Every man did his whole duty, and everything went on without a hitch. The total staff was one hundred and twenty. Mrs. Dr. Minge was chief matron. There were many interesting characters among the matrons, and one in particular was Miss Mary Pettigrew, who was chief of the Virginia division. My brigade commanders are wounded, also a brigade commander of General Buford's division, etc. In the meantime orders were issued to distribute ten days rations, one hundred rounds of ammunition per man and two hundred for each cannon. On Aug. 2 General Chalmers ordered McCulloch's Brigade from Tupelo to Oxford, oubtless felt some little concern for his personal safety. Very soon his entire force was hurrying towards the Tallahatchie river. The following morning General Chalmers was in hot pursuit. Leading Mabry's Brigade in person, he assigned to General Buford the other two. McCulloch's Brigade was commanded by Colonel William Wade. Do not forget that the federal forces had been guilty of the harshest and most inhuman excesses, and that numbers of our men lived in the country traversed by Smith's

We, the undersigned, Directors the Bank of Pittsylvania, hereby certify that we have examined the foregoing statement and found the same to be correct: Richard Geo. Craft Geo. J. H. Hargrave, Wm. Rison. N. B.--Messrs. A. S. Buford and J. M. Walker are in the Confederate States Army. Messrs. W. W. Keen and Tarpley White absent from home. State of Virginia, County of Pittsylvania, Ss: This day L. B. Conway, cashier of the Bank of Pittsylvania, personally appeared before me, a Notary Public for the county aforesaid, and made oath that the foregoing statement exhibits the true condition of the Bank of Pittsylvania, as it existed on the first day of July last, to the best of his knowledge and belief. On motion of Mr. Buford, it was Resolved, That a select committee of five be appointed to confer with the proper authorities of the Confederate Government in relation to the construction of a railroad between the town of Danville, Virginia, and the town of Greensby Mr. Grattan, of suppressing the issue of notes by corporations or individuals; by Mr. Rives, of making some alterations in the Stay law; by Mr. Woolfolk, of amending the president law in relation to the free negro population of the State; by Mr. Buford, of extending the time of organizing the James River Coal Company; by Mr. Baskerville, of amending the ordinance for the re-organization of the militia, recently passed by the Convention; by Mr. Bass, of paying for clothing, &c., recently furni
with this connexion, a continuous line of railroad will be secured through the middle of the Confederacy, so indispensable to the cause not only of Virginia and North Carolina, but of the entire South, we, the people of Danville, as well as a portion of the citizens of Caswell, pledge our undivided support to said connexion, and will contribute our substance as liberally as our means will allow. 2. Army agency. --Mr. A. S. Buford, who has been appointed Army Agent for Virginia, has opened a depot in Shockoe Slip, near the Columbian Hotel, The friends of the Virginia troops are requested to send their contributions for them to the Virginia depot, and Mr. Buford will have them promptly forwarded at the expense of the State. He will do this we are assured without the least delay. The name of the company, regiment, division, and corps, should be marked on the boxes. All contributions,hockoe Slip, near the Columbian Hotel, The friends of the Virginia troops are requested to send their contributions for them to the Virginia depot, and Mr. Buford will have them promptly forwarded at the expense of the State. He will do this we are assured without the least delay. The name of the company, regiment, division, and corps, should be marked on the boxes. All contributions, whether to individuals or for the sick and wounded generally from this State, should be sent to this depot.
