[special Dispatch to the Richmond Dispatch.] Norfolk, Va., Feb. 8. --A messenger just up from Roanoke Island reports that fifty-three Federal vessels opened a tremendous cannonade on the Island yesterday morning, the 7th inst., at 10 o'clock. The firing was continued with great violence till night. Our batteries returned the fire in splendid style, with vigor and execution. One steamer was set on fire. Several houses on the island were set on fire by the enemy's hot shot. The assailing force attempted to land under cover of their guns. They had not succeeded in this attempt when the messenger left. No killed of our side were reported up to two o'clock yesterday. It was supposed that the fight would be renewed this morning. The bombarding vessels were stationed about two miles from the island. [Associated press Dispatches.] Norfolk, February 8. --The engagement at Roanoke Island commenced on Friday forenoon, and continued until two o'clock in the afternoon, when the courier left. The enemy then ceased the most energetic portion of their attack. The attempt of the Federals to land failed. Two of their steamers were much damaged. Our batteries were uninjured. The firing on our part was conducted with great coolness. Some private residences on the Island were injured. Gen. Wise is at Nags Head, sick in bed. His physicians could only with great difficulty prevent his joining in the fight. Heavy firing was heard south of Norfolk up to half-past 1 o'clock to day. It is presumed to have been the cannonading at Roanoke Island. [second Dispatch.] Norfolk, Va., Feb. 9th. --An officer from the Confederate steamer Curlew has just arrived from Roanoke Island, and reports that the Curlew had been sunk by the enemy.--The other Confederate gun-boats ha

From Fort Henry.particulars of the late fight. Memphis Feb. 7, (via Mobile, Feb. 8) --A special dispatch from Paris, received last night, reports that three gun-boats arrived at the Tennessee river bridge yesterday at 11 o'clock, took possession of it, turned the draw, and passed up the river, first shelling the town. The bridge was not damaged. Later advices lead to the conclusion that our forces have evacuated Fort Henry and retreated to Fort Donelson. The Federals arethe Tennessee river bridge, which is not destroyed. Two Federal gun-boats, which were injured, were subsequently lost. The provisions of Fort Henry were saved, but the guns were spiked and abandoned. Nashville, Feb. 7, (via Mobile, Feb. 8)--A dispatch has been received this morning from the Hon. The House of Representatives at Washington has passed a bill authorizing the issue of one hundred and fifty millions dollars' worth of Treasury demand notes. The legal tender clause is incorporated in the bill. The vote upon the bill stood: eyes 93, nose 54. It is probable that the Senate will enact the bill. The direct tax bill has not been passed yet.--It is still under consideration in Congress. The Herald publishes the following dispatches: Rolla, Mo., Feb. 5.--Gen. The Federals at Florence and Tuscumbia — destruction of property. Memphis, Feb. 8, (via Mobile, Feb. 9) --The city is full of excitement in consequence of the ascent of the river by Federal gun-boats, The Federals went to Florence. They destroyed the warehouse at Tuscumbia landing, and inflicted other injuries. It is reported that they are marching towards loka, Mississippi.
