Kent, Jacob Ford 1835-
Military officer; born in Philadelphia, Sept. 14, 1835; entered the army as second lieutenant of the 3d Infantry, in May, 1861.
For gallantry at Marye's Heights he was promoted first lieutenant, and brevetted captain and major; was promoted captain of the 3d Infantry in 1864; and for gallantry in the battle of Spottsylvania, and for distinguished services in the field during the war, was brevetted lieutenant-colonel and colonel.
At the close of the war he was commissioned colonel of the 24th United States Infantry.
On July 8, 1898, he was appointed a majorgeneral of volunteers.
During the campaign in Cuba he commanded the first division of the 5th Corps.
On Oct. 4, 1898, he was promoted brigadier-general, U. S. A., and on Oct. 15 was retired at his own request.
