He is the author of a treatise on Railour years. In 1883 he was elected to the United States Senate, and again in 1888, serving until his death at Washington in 1893. For thirty-five years Senator Colquitt was a Democratic leader, upholding the principles of his party with courage, eloqon his plantation until 1885, when President Cleveland appointed him to an important office in the land department, and in 1893 to a still more important one in the Indian department, which position he held at the time of his death, March 10, 1898. 880; in 1878 was appointed commissioner to the Paris exposition; in 1885 was sent to Petersburg as consul-general; and in 1893 was appointed minister of the United States to Guatemala and Honduras.
