Dana, Napoleon Jackson Tecumseh, 1822-
military officer; born in Fort Sullivan, Eastport, Me., April 10, 1822; graduated at West Point in 1842; served in the war with Mexico; resigned in 1855; and in October, 1861, became colonel of the 1st Minnesota Volunteers.
He was in the battle at Ball's Bluff (q. v.) ; was made brigadier-general early in 1862; was active throughout the whole campaign on the Peninsula, participating in all the battles; and at Antietam commanded a brigade, and was wounded.
A few weeks later he was promoted to major-general of volunteers; was with the Army of the Gulf in 1863; commanded the 13th Army Corps a while; and had charge of the district of Vicksburg and west Tennessee in 1864.
From December, 1864, to May, 1865, he was in command of the Department of the Mississippi.
He resigned in 1865, and was reappointed to the army with the rank of captain, and retired in 1894.

Davis, George Whitefield, 1839-
Military officer; born in Thompson, Conn., July 26, 1839; entered the Union army as quartermaster's sergeant in the 11th Connecticut Infantry, Nov. 27, 1861; became first lieutenant in the same regiment April 5, 1862; captain and assistant quartermaster and major and quartermaster in May, 1865; and was mustered out of the service, April 20, 1866.
On Jan. 22, 1867, he was appointed captain in the 14th United States Infantry; in 1894 was promoted to major of the 11th Infantry; in 1897 transferred to the 9th Infantry; and in 1898 promoted to lieutenant-colonel of the 14th Infantry.
At the beginning of the war with Spain he was commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers; was honorably discharged under that commission and reappointed to the same rank, April 14, 1899.
On Oct. 19, 1899, he was

MacARTHURrthur, Arthur 1845-
Military officer; born in Massachusetts, June 1, 1845; son of Judge Arthur MacArthur; of Scotch descent.
He entered the Union army as. first lieutenant and adjutant of the 24th Wisconsin Infantry, Aug. 4, 1862; was promoted major, Jan. 25, 1864, and lieutenant-colonel and brevet colonel in May, 1865.
On Feb. 23, 1866, he was commissioned successively second lieutenant and first lieutenant in the 17th United States Infantry; was promoted captain in the 36th Infantry, July 28, 1866, and transferred to the 26th Infantry, Sept. 21 of the same year; was promoted major and assistant adjutant-general, July 1, 1889; lieutenant-colonel, May 26, 1896.
During the Civil War he made an exceptionally brilliant record, and was several times mentioned in orders for conspicuous gallantry and daring.

Wallen, Henry Davies 1819-1886
Military officer; born in Savannah, Ga., April 19, 1819; graduated at the United States Military Academy in 1840; served in the Seminole War in Florida in 1840-42; was wounded at the battle of Palo Alto in the Mexican War; promoted major, Nov. 25, 1861; served through the Civil War; was inspector-general of the Department of New Mexico in 1862-64; commanded a regiment at Fort Schuyler, N. Y., till May, 1865; brevetted brigadier-general and promoted lieutenant-colonel in 1865; promoted colonel in 1873; and was retired in the following year.
He died in New York City, Dec. 2, 1886.
